The best MTG card scanner should connect a physical printing to a collection you can use. For a deck builder, that means finding owned cards and reviewing deck information. For a collector, exact treatments, organization and portable records may be the more important part of the workflow.

Choose whether your main task is building decks, sorting a collection or managing a trade binder, and try that task from start to finish.
Confirm the physical printing, not only the card name.
Include reprints and different finishes in your trial pile. Check the set, collector number, language and treatment after each match. If you collect unusual frames or alternate artwork, search for those specific versions before starting a large import. A recognizable spell can have several catalogue entries, so the ability to select another printing is part of the scanner’s usefulness, not an occasional extra.
Look beyond the camera for deck building.
