A thousand cards need more than a camera.
A stack of cards becomes a useful inventory only when the saved entries make sense afterward. You need quantities, the right printings and a way to keep working when the first scanning session ends. That is the useful starting point for Collectr vs MonPrice.
We would start with Collectr for a varied collection you want to keep organized over time. MonPrice deserves particular attention for a large intake project whose results need to leave the app as structured data. Decide what the finished inventory should look like before choosing how to create it.
MonPrice gives the scanning project an export destination.
MonPrice documents CSV and JSON downloads for scan results and collections. It also advertises compatibility with CardSlinger scanning hardware. Those are concrete reasons to investigate it when the task involves several boxes rather than a few new pulls.
Choose a small sample before setting up a large batch. Include duplicates, different conditions and a foil variant, then open the exported file. Confirm that the fields preserve the distinctions needed by your spreadsheet or destination tool. CSV is convenient for rows and columns; JSON may suit a more structured transfer.
Keep an untouched copy of that sample. If you later rename columns or change values, you will have a reference for what the app actually produced. A successful small transfer is more useful than discovering a mismatch after cataloguing every box.

Collectr suits inventory that keeps moving.
Collectr documents bulk copying, moving and deletion between portfolios, with filters for raw cards, graded cards and sealed products. Its free plan includes unlimited portfolios, while PRO adds export. That combination fits holdings spread across a trade binder, display collection and unopened products.
Decide whether your portfolios describe storage locations or collecting goals. Mixing those systems can make one physical card look like two holdings. When moving cards between boxes, update their records at the same time. After a trade, adjust quantities before the next purchase makes the change harder to reconstruct.

Build a repeatable scan-and-check routine.
Collectr describes identifying the set, number and variant, then setting quantity and condition. MonPrice’s Pokémon guide describes consecutive bulk scanning and recording a purchase price and date when adding a card to the portfolio.
For a large collection, separate unprocessed cards from completed cards and stop at a clear boundary. Count one section before continuing. If there are ten copies of the same printing, decide how you will record their quantities and different conditions before treating them as a single group.
Return to the saved records after a break. Can you locate a card by its physical storage place and distinguish a duplicate from a different printing? That is the workflow worth checking before committing another evening to the project.
Collectr scanning workflow and games · MonPrice Pokémon workflow and card languages
Game coverage and printed languages need their own checks.
MonPrice’s iOS history documents Pokémon, Magic and One Piece support. Collectr’s scanner page names those games plus Yu-Gi-Oh!, Lorcana, Flesh and Blood and Digimon.
For Pokémon, MonPrice’s official guide names English, Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian cards. Its iOS notes also mention Chinese pricing and card-number search; that does not establish Chinese camera recognition. Collectr shows EN, JP and CN portfolio filters.
Use those details to select a representative sample from your collection. Confirm the set code, collector number and printed edition in the saved record. Do not extend a Pokémon language list to every Magic printing simply because both games appear in the same app.

MonPrice advertises ten initial free scans and free manual search, collections and portfolio tools. Use the initial allowance to inspect the records you care about. Collectr documents unlimited scanning in PRO. Choose a billing interval after deciding whether this is a short cataloguing project or a collection you expect to update weekly.

Current updates and the practical choice.
MonPrice iOS 1.45, released September 26, adds subset filters for the 30th Celebration collection. Collectr remains on 2.5.10, whose notes include saved trades, grade comparisons and camera-flash fixes.
Choose MonPrice when a documented batch workflow and CSV or JSON output are central to the job. Choose Collectr when maintaining several kinds of holdings inside a flexible portfolio is the bigger task. In either case, finish the sample inventory and its backup before starting the next box.
