Start with the empty pockets.
If the next card you want is the one missing from page seven, your collection app has a different job from an app you open to check a portfolio total. Collectr and Dex both track cards, but this comparison starts with that everyday difference.
Our starting pick is Dex for a Pokémon collection built around completing binders and sets. Collectr is the more natural starting point when Pokémon shares your shelves with several other TCGs. Choose around the question you ask most often: what is missing, or how is the wider collection doing?
One franchise, or several games together?
Dex focuses on Pokémon. Collectr’s scanner page explicitly lists Pokémon, Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece, Lorcana, Flesh and Blood and Digimon. Its portfolio tools include bulk moves and filters for raw cards, graded cards and sealed products.
A mixed collection benefits from a consistent routine across games. For a Pokémon-only binder, the useful routine may be checking a missing variant before buying another pack or arranging a trade. Write down that routine before choosing where to enter the rest of your cards.
Keep your collecting goal concrete. A numbered set, a favorite illustrator and a complete run of one Pokémon are different projects. Decide what counts as finished before letting any progress indicator become your target.

Scan variants in groups, then check the overview.
Dex’s scanner guide recommends sorting normal cards, reverse holos and other variants into separate piles. After scanning, its overview lets you assign variants to the group. You can narrow recognition results using filters such as expansion or rarity. The camera scanner requires Dex+ and is documented for iOS and Android.
Collectr describes matching a card’s set, number and variant, followed by setting quantity and condition before saving. With either app, inspect the first few saved entries while the physical cards are still in front of you.
For a whole album, work through a small section at a time. Keep completed pages separate from loose additions, and reconcile duplicate quantities before moving on. The point is to finish with an inventory you can trust, rather than a long scan history that still needs sorting.

The important language difference.
Dex groups cards into International, Japan and China’s Simplified Chinese region. It does not store English, French, German, Italian or Spanish as separate collectible attributes within International. Its help page suggests card notes for recording the language of your own copy.
Korean and Traditional Chinese card regions are outside Dex’s currently documented coverage. Collectr shows EN, JP and CN portfolio filters; those labels alone are not a promise that every imported printing will match.
Bring your actual imported cards into the first sample. Compare set numbering, region and finish before marking a slot complete. Two cards with matching artwork can belong to different collecting goals, and an interface translated into your preferred language does not change the printed edition.
For a bilingual binder, decide how you will distinguish copies before entering them. A consistent note convention is easier to maintain than trying to reconstruct language details months after a trade.

Folders, exports and the next collecting session.
Dex’s premium guide gives free accounts three folders and Dex+ unlimited folders, card notes and collection or folder CSV export. It specifically documents CSV export on iOS. Collectr includes collection export in PRO and supports bulk copying, moving and deleting between portfolios.
Separate ownership from wishlists in your own process. A card you want, a duplicate available for trade and the copy staying in your binder should not become three owned copies. After a trade, remove the outgoing quantity before adding the replacement.
Export a small sample and inspect its identifiers and quantities before making it your backup routine. Keep dated files somewhere you can find without opening the collection app. That habit also makes a later migration easier to assess.

What is paid, and what changed recently?
Checked October 13, 2026, Collectr web PRO is US$7.99 monthly or US$59.99 annually. Dex’s US App Store lists monthly offers at US$3.99 and US$4.99, an annual offer at US$34.99, a one-year purchase at US$44.99 and lifetime at US$109. Match the selected offer and billing period before subscribing.
Dex’s latest iOS release is 26.0.0 from September 16. It introduces redesigned collection Insights, Pokémon cameo tracking and binder improvements. Cameos are a particularly interesting collecting angle if you want appearances in another Pokémon’s artwork, rather than only cards bearing its name.
Try one small collecting project first. If finding missing Pokémon variants is the main job, Dex deserves that trial. If the job spans several games, graded cards and sealed items, start with Collectr’s broader portfolio workflow.
