The card you keep and the card you might grade.

A childhood Pokémon binder creates two jobs. First, work out what is actually in it. Then decide which cards deserve a closer inspection. Collectr and HoloDex both help digitize the collection, but the distinction matters when choosing which subscription earns a place on your phone.

Our starting recommendation is Collectr for the inventory you expect to maintain over time. HoloDex is the more interesting candidate if condition inspection is part of your routine. Start with the cards you own: a worn favourite, a recent pull and a duplicate you might trade. Each asks a different question of an app.

Check the printing before inspecting the corners.

Collectr describes a scan-to-portfolio workflow with set, number and variant matching, followed by quantity and condition. HoloDex combines camera identification with market-price lookup. For a Pokémon binder, check the collector number and finish before saving the entry.

Keep duplicate copies beside each other while entering them. A clean copy and a worn copy may share an illustration, but they should not silently become two identical records. Put entered cards in a separate pile so a break halfway through the binder does not turn into accidental double counting.

HoloDex gives condition inspection its own role.

HoloDex advertises AI observations about centering, whitening and surface wear. That gives it a distinct purpose for someone sorting possible grading submissions. The developer defines the result as an estimate rather than a professional certification.

Use the observations to decide where to look more carefully: compare the borders, inspect the back and tilt the card under a light. Keep a short list of the cards worth another look. A useful inspection session ends with reasons for keeping, trading or submitting each card, rather than a collection of unexplained numbers.

For an already slabbed card, record the grading company and the grade printed on its label. Keep that record separate from any new camera estimate. It makes future comparisons much easier to understand.

For a full collection, think beyond the first scan.

Collectr offers bulk copying, moving and deletion between portfolios, plus filters for raw cards, graded cards and sealed products. Its free plan includes unlimited portfolios. HoloDex documents duplicate tracking, wishlists and synchronization across devices.

We would organize a large collection around where cards live: a display binder, trade box and sealed shelf. Pick one home for each physical copy. If the first evening is spent entering only your most valuable cards, label that group clearly before treating its total as the value of everything you own. Keep wanted cards apart from owned cards, and review quantities after a trade so the digital record still matches the box.

Games and card languages are separate decisions.

Both name Pokémon, One Piece, Lorcana, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic. HoloDex’s Android description also lists Dragon Ball Super, Digimon, Gundam, Union Arena, Riftbound and Star Wars Unlimited. Collectr’s scanner page additionally names Flesh and Blood and Digimon.

Collectr documents EN, JP and CN portfolio filters. HoloDex does not publish an exact supported card-edition language list in the checked sources. For a Japanese or Chinese Pokémon collection, confirm the exact set, number and edition in the saved entry before entering the remaining pages. An interface-language setting does not identify a card’s printing.

Compare the billing interval, then the exit route.

Prices checked October 2, 2026 show Collectr web PRO at US$7.99 monthly or US$59.99 annually. HoloDex’s US App Store lists a US$12.99 monthly plan, US$49.99 yearly plan and US$4.99 weekly purchase. These are the labelled options, rather than a single price attached to every offer.

Unlimited scanning is advertised with paid access in both. Collectr also documents collection export in PRO. The checked HoloDex sources describe sync and importing, but do not document an inventory-file export. For a collection you intend to maintain for years, resolve the backup workflow before entering hundreds of cards.

Choose the billing period around a realistic routine. An occasional binder clean-up and a weekly buying habit are different workloads. Decide which paid action you will actually repeat, then compare its cost over that period.

The latest releases improve what happens after scanning.

HoloDex iOS 2.3, released September 10, adds a Sealed tab, wishlist bulk actions and broader portfolio views. Collectr’s current iOS version is 2.5.10; its notes include saved trades, grade comparisons and camera-flash fixes.

That leaves a practical choice. Pick Collectr when the main task is keeping your holdings organized and portable. Consider HoloDex when you want condition observations alongside the collection. Give the app a small, varied binder section first; the saved records should make the next collecting session easier.
